How and why to use a spotter

A spotter is someone who helps the lifter perform the exercise correctly and safely. The person performing the actual lift is the one that does the lifting, not the spotter. If or when the lifter technique starts to falter and it seems that the lifter might fail at performing the last lift or two then the spotter steps into assist them in finishing the rep and safely racking the weight.

A gym spotter is going to help you with your lifting. Whether your doing a squat, a bench press, a shoulder press or any other lifting you may need help with, a spotter job is to stand where they need to be and help guide the weight. A spotter is not someone there to help you lift the weight on every rep of every rep. The spotter only is there to ensure your safety and help you out if it looks like you might fail on the last rep or two of your set.

The spotter has their hands or arms under the bar or body to make sure you go along with the motion but not lifting any of the weight unless necessary on the last rep or two the lifter is trying to do if the lifter seem to not be able to achieve it on their own.
