How and why to use a spotter

A spotter is someone who assists the lifter in performing exercises safely and correctly. The lifter is responsible for doing the work, while the spotter provides support only when needed. If the lifter’s technique begins to falter and it appears they may struggle to complete the final rep, the spotter steps in to help finish the repetition and safely rack the weight.

A gym spotter is there to assist you with your lifting. Whether you’re performing a squat, bench press, shoulder press, or any other exercise, the spotter’s role is to position themselves correctly and guide the weight if needed. A spotter is not meant to lift the weight for you on every repetition. Their primary responsibility is to ensure your safety and step in only if it appears you may struggle on the final rep or two of your set.

A spotter keeps their hands or arms under the bar or body to help guide the movement, without lifting the weight. They only step in on the final one or two reps if it looks like the lifter cannot complete them safely on their own.
